Presented by the curatorial collective THE ACTION BUREAU, Los Angeles artist Paul Waddell will perform his new piece, Quick start camping trip urbane sim revision: a system for showing results (2012). Developed specifically for Art Los Angeles Contemporary, this performance will loosely take the form of an intuitive camping trip, instructing the audience on survival in casual and urbane environments.

Paul Waddell is a painter and performance artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. He recently presented his performance work at the 10th annual Open Performance Festival in Beijing, China. Paul Waddell’s performance work has been written about in the Boston Dig, Art Papers, Beijing Today and TimeOut Boston.

THE ACTION BUREAU is a L.A.-based curatorial collective dedicated to furthering the discourse connecting contemporary and historical performance art. Comprised of artists Parker Davis and Paul Waddell, and writer Catherine Taft, THE ACTION BUREAU insists on a kind of performance art that maintains a rigorous engagement with the rich history and basic fundamentals of the medium. The collective seeks to promote this discourse, both locally and abroad, through the production of live-art events, exhibitions, lectures, print and multimedia publications.

THE ACTION BUREAU is pleased to present FRIEND #00, a performance by artist J. Patrick Walsh III, which will take place Saturday, December 10, 2011, 4pm until sunset in the Bronson Caves located inside Los Angeles’ Griffith Park.

Friend #00 at The Bad Cave

Friend #00 came to me in a dream; he was wearing a football jersey, with the last name Friend and his number 00. At a distance I could see him walking towards an opening to a cave, or a portal. He drifted quietly through the night. I saw this figure as one of zero reflection, anything he communicated or transmitted was absorbed by the outside world but he desired echo. In my dream I knew he had been searching for a reflection and like myself had started his search in an anechoic chamber known for its testing of cellular communication. This performance continues the search for his reflection from the manmade echoless chamber to the man made echo chamber the Bronson Cave, which appeared as the “bat cave” in the classic television show “Batman.” At this location, a series of communication devices will be installed such as sonar and sculpture along with spoken texts that will attempt to echo back at Friend #00.

J. Patrick Walsh III is an artist based in Los Angeles. He studied at Keystone College in LaPlume, PA and received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. He is currently completing his MFA from the University of Southern California.
